Pool Maintenance for Beginners: Keep Your Pool Crystal Clear
Essential pool maintenance tips for new pool owners, covering water chemistry, cleaning routines, and equipment care.
The Three Pillars of Pool Care
Pool maintenance comes down to three things: circulation, chemistry, and cleaning. Get these right and your pool will stay clear and safe all year.
1. Circulation
Your pump and filter are the heart of your pool system.
How Long to Run Your Pump
- Summer: 8-10 hours per day
- Winter: 4-6 hours per day
- Run during off-peak electricity hours to save money
- Variable speed pumps can run longer at lower speeds (more efficient)
Filter Types
- Sand filter — Backwash every 2-4 weeks, replace sand every 5-7 years
- Cartridge filter — Hose off monthly, replace cartridge every 1-2 years
- DE (diatomaceous earth) — Best filtration but most maintenance
2. Water Chemistry
Test your water weekly with a test kit or strips.
Key Levels
| Parameter | Ideal Range |
|---|---|
| pH | 7.2 - 7.6 |
| Free Chlorine | 1 - 3 ppm |
| Total Alkalinity | 80 - 120 ppm |
| Calcium Hardness | 200 - 400 ppm |
| Cyanuric Acid (stabiliser) | 30 - 50 ppm |
Adjusting Chemistry
- pH too high — Add hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid)
- pH too low — Add sodium carbonate (soda ash)
- Low chlorine — Add liquid chlorine or granular shock
- Green water — Super-chlorinate (shock) and run filter 24 hours
Salt Chlorinators
If you have a salt pool:
- Maintain salt level at 3,000-5,000 ppm (check manufacturer specs)
- Clean salt cell every 3-6 months with diluted acid
- Still need to monitor pH and alkalinity manually
3. Cleaning
Weekly Tasks
- Skim leaves and debris from surface
- Empty skimmer baskets
- Brush walls and steps (prevents algae)
- Vacuum floor (manual or robotic cleaner)
- Check and empty pump basket
Monthly Tasks
- Backwash or clean filter
- Test and adjust calcium hardness and stabiliser
- Inspect equipment for leaks or unusual noises
- Clean waterline tile with pool-safe cleaner
Seasonal Tasks
- Start of summer — Full chemical balance, check equipment, clean filter
- End of summer — Reduce pump hours, balance chemistry for lower usage
- Winter — Consider a pool cover, reduce chemical dosing
Common Problems
Green Pool
- Test and adjust pH to 7.2
- Super-chlorinate (triple the normal dose)
- Run filter 24-48 hours continuously
- Brush walls and vacuum dead algae
- Backwash filter after clearing
Cloudy Water
- Usually caused by poor filtration or unbalanced chemistry
- Check filter is clean and running long enough
- Test and balance pH and chlorine
- Add clarifier if chemistry is correct
When to Call a Professional
- Persistent green or cloudy water despite treatment
- Equipment failures (pump, filter, heater)
- Cracked or damaged pool surface
- Leak detection
- Annual equipment service and safety inspection
